Prayer Guide

For the Week of August 9-15

OPENING

Matthew 6:9-15

“So this is how you should pray: ‘Our Father in heaven, we pray that your name will always be kept holy. We pray that your kingdom will come—that what you want will be done here on earth, the same as in heaven. Give us the food we need for today. Forgive our sins, just as we have forgiven those who did wrong to us. Don’t let us be tempted, but save us from the Evil One.’ Yes, if you forgive others for the wrongs they do to you, then your Father in heaven will also forgive your wrongs.”

SCRIPTURE

  1. 1 Timothy 2:1-2: Therefore I exhort first of all that supplications, prayers, intercessions, and giving of thanks be made for all men, 2 for kings and all who are in authority, that we may lead a quiet and peaceable life in all godliness and reverence.

Father, in obedience to Your Word, we lift up our President, Vice President, Congress, Senate and our Supreme Court, and ask that you guide and direct our leaders. We ask that you give them wisdom in the decisions they make. We pray for unity and peace between the different parties, and between the different branches of government. And we ask that the Holy, reverential fear of God fall on all of them to cause them to look up to You before they make any decisions.

  2. Proverbs 22:6: Train up a child in the way he should go, And when he is old he will not depart from it.

Lord, we thank you that our nation values education, and we pray for the schools we have. We pray for the teachers who have dedicated their lives to training up children. Lord, you see the curriculums, and we ask for You to eliminate the ungodly, unrighteous falsehoods in some of our schools, and to replace it with righteous guidance. We pray for this generation, that they will value education and learn critical thinking with logic and be able to discern the truth from falsehoods. Protect our schools; protect our teachers who love children and protect our children. And Lord, You see how the universities are shaping the next generation of leaders; Lord, take back our universities for Your Kingdom.

  3. Deut. 11: 10-12: For the land which you go to possess is not like the land of Egypt from which you have come, where you sowed your seed and watered it by foot, as a vegetable garden; 11 but the land which you cross over to possess is a land of hills and valleys, which drinks water from the rain of heaven, 12 a land for which the Lord your God cares; the eyes of the Lord your God are always on it, from the beginning of the year to the very end of the year.

Jesus, You love Maui, and You have blessed Maui with the hills and valleys, and Your word says You will allow it to “drink water from the rain of heaven”.  Right now, our land is dry and parched.  We are calling out to You to send rain – a heavenly rain that will be a blessing, not causing damage.  We are lifting our eyes and voices to You, Creator of everything seen and unseen, and trusting You to send rain to our beautiful Valley Isle.  And we also pray for the rest of our state and other nations which are experiencing drought – send rain of heaven.

  4. 2 Thes. 1:4: so that we ourselves boast of you among the churches of God for your patience and faith in all your persecutions and tribulations that you endure,

Holy Spirit, we lift up our Christian brothers & sisters across the globe who are suffering from persecution.  We have never experienced losing a job because of our faith, being forced to deny Jesus or face death, having our children stolen from us because we are “unfit parents”, trying to teach our children about Jesus.  We aren’t walking in their shoes, but Lord, we lift them up to You and ask for Your grace & mercy, Your provision for them.  Grant them courage, and let them feel Your presence as they walk through the fires of persecution.

  5. 2 Peter 3:9: The Lord is not slack concerning His promise, as some count slackness, but is longsuffering toward us, not willing that any should perish but that all should come to repentance.

Jesus, You died so that the lost could come to know You and have their names written in the Book of Life. It cost You everything – Your very life. Help us to have Your love for the lost, so that we are empowered to speak words of life to our neighbors, co-workers, unsaved family members. Let us be ambassadors of Your love everywhere we go, whether to the doctors, to the bank, to a zoom meeting. Be with us today and use us for your glory. We pray this in Jesus’ wonderful name. Amen
